Kalms and in control

Sleeplessness

As is always the case with stress, it's a catch-22 situation. You're worrying about things, so you can't sleep. Then because you're tired, you worry even more. Getting a good night's sleep helps you to keep challenges in perspective. These simple rules can help:

Only go to bed when you are tired. If you wait until you are absolutely shattered before you tuck yourself in, you'll begin to associate being in bed with being asleep, rather than with lying awake worrying.

Don't read in bed. Don't watch telly in bed. Just sleep. This works for the same reason as the first tip. The aim is to keep stimulation to a minimum and focus on the job in hand – a good night's kip.

If you are awake for more than 25 minutes, get up. The frustration of insomnia is enough to keep anyone awake! You know when you’re not going to drop off, so get up and do something boring, like the ironing or accounts. You'll feel a lot better for knowing you're putting the time to good use and it'll stop you going over worries in your mind.
